"Formally" and "formerly" are pronounced very similarly and as a result are prone to being mixed up with one another. "Formally" is an adjective used to mean "officially" or in a "serious or correct" manner.
Formerly
Exemple : ‘’He formerly worked as a police officer.’’
"Formerly" is an adverb which is used as a synonym of "previously."
